Burnout text effect

Step one:

First type your text. In this tutorial the font is Arial, Bold Italic, 60 pt, smooth and #6C151E.

Step two:

Add the following layer-styles:

Drop Shadow Structure Blend Mode: Normal Color: #6C151E Opacity: 100 Angle: 120 Use Global Light: Check Distance: 2 Spread: 0 Size: 5 Quality Contour: Default Anti-aliased: Uncheck Noise: 0

Gradient Overlay Gradient Blend Mode: Color Burn Opacity: 79 Gradient: Default Reverse: Check Style: Reflected Align with Layer: Check Angle: 90 Scale: 100

Step three:

Now the fun part, adding smoke, blue flame, and fire trails. First we have to modify the brush so its shaped randomly. All you have to do is set your brush to a 13 px soft brush and add the brush shape dynamics settings found below. To access the brush presets go to windows > brushes.

Step four:

Once the brush is set it's up to you if you want to add smoke or fire trail. To add this elements, with the brush tool all you do is paint in a straight line and PS will render it into random trails. Here are the color code for each element.

Step five:

First the smoke trails. If your going to add this element, create a new layer and set the opacity level to 74 %. On this tutorial I added a bunch of smoke trails on the body and bottom of the text.

Step six:

Now two set of fire, first a touch on the text.

Create a new layer and add an Inner glow and Satin layer styles.

Draw a straight #E6B442 line on the text and with the help of layer styles it should render into fire element.

Step seven:

One fire is great but more on the bottom of the text is even better, it will give your text a burnout look. Just make a new layer, use the same color, technique and the same layer styles settings as step six.

Step eight:

Finish it off with blue flames. First add one smoke trail on the fire then in a new layer draw a #0360A2 line on top of the smoke trail. Set the blue flames layer blending mode to color dodge. See picture guide for visuals.

Finale:

Remember if you want your final piece to be unique, experiment with the brush dynamics and for every element use different settings.
